Let me first start off by saying that I’m not exactly the smartest guy when it comes to “technical” things. I know how to turn on my Wii and play games but that’s about it. Reason #1: You void the warranty on your Wii. Anytime you open up the casing of your Wii or any other console, the warranty is voided. So now, if anything ends up going wrong with your system after you install the mod chip, you will not be allowed to send it into Nintendo for repairs. You will have to go out and buy a brand new (or used) Wii from the store. This can set you back a few hundred dollars.

Reason #2: You can brick the system and make it not even work. Anytime you alter the hardware inside of a gaming console, you run the risk of messing something up and completely breaking your Wii. Going back to what I mentioned above about voiding your warranty, if you break your Wii, you won’t have a warranty in place anymore to get it fixed.

Reason #3: Mod chips can be expensive. Depending on where you go to buy your chip, I’ve seen them run up to $100 or more. Yes you can find cheaper ones, but you may be sacrificing quality and the chip might stop working sooner than you would like it to. On top of the price of the chip, you will need to pay someone to install it for you if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Reason #4: Chips can be complicated to install. Unless you have previous experience doing this kind of stuff, there’s a good chance that you won’t know how to install the chip and could mess something up in your Wii. You never want to run the risk of altering hardware in a gaming system if you have no idea what you’re doing because the damage can be irreversible.

So after reading the reasons above about why you should avoid using a mod chip, I hope you have a better understanding of it all. Unlocking your Wii with Homebrew is a much better choice.
